The last of the big three on my bucket list is to run an ultra-marathon at least once in my life. An ultra-marathon is running over a distance that is longerthan the standard marathon (26.219 miles, 42.195 kilometres). At the moment, the most common ultra-marathon distances "are 50 kilometres (31.069 mi), 100 kilometres (62.137 mi), 50 miles (80.4672 km), and 100 miles (160.9344 km)." Quoting Wikipedia's description of an ultra-marathon. Given the choice, I personally want to run the 100 kilometre ultra-marathon,
I remember first hearing and reading about ultra-marathons, years ago in an article of a sports magazine I'd bought years and years ago. The article basically looked at the story of a man who ran ultra-marathons through the Sahara Dessert and it really inspired me to want to do something like that, though not through a dessert, but rather on roads, trails or a mix of the two are good enough for me. There have also been documentaries on YouTube, that I've stumbled upon, that have also been a source of inspiration for me in the same way.
To be totally honest with you, reader, this particular challenge is unlikely to happen any time soon as I'm barely fit enough to run 5 kilometres (3.1069 miles) without stopping. Its why I've joined the Tilgate Park Run, with my first run last week, Saturday, before my weigh in at Slimming World. My time wasn't that bad, 31 minutes, 54 seconds. I'm doing this to get myself into the habit of running 5km on a regular basis and to get my body and my mind used to running this distance before gradually increasing to longer and longer runs, given I also need to find the balance of commuting, working and exercising.
I'll be sure to keep you updated with my exercise journey as I slowly train towards running my ultra-marathon.
