Blipfoto; A Photo Journal

Updated: Feb 23, 2019

July 25th; Scaredy Cat

In an earlier post I mentioned something about a website I have an account with. Its a photography website called Blipfoto. It was started by a man called Joe Green (if I remember correctly) many years ago and the aim was simple. Take one photograph a day and post it against the day it was taken. The aim and the concept of posting a photo every day hasn't changed.

I discovered it through a friend who'd used it occasionally and I thought I'd give it a ago. This was in January 2014, when I lived in Hoedspruit, South Africa, with my parents. I was bored and had little else to do. Every day, with dogged determination, I'd take a photograph and post it. Within a month of me joining I moved to London, England, and thus my journey across the nations got documented through my daily photography. Blipfoto has given me a very vivid platform from where to experiment and develop my skills as a photographer and as a writer.

Even though, Blipfoto did nearly get liquidated at one point a few years ago, it was saved through the loving donations of a large amount of Blipfoto members who didn't want to loose Blipfoto. None of the users, Blippers, wanted to loose Blipfoto and pulled together to prevent the website getting shut down. Blipfoto was, and still is, a close knit community. With the success of Crowd Funding, changes were brought into place, one of which was the introduction of Membership fees... and like many sites, you have the choice of a free account or a paid account. You can still have a free account if you so wish, or you could pay a minimal amount each year to contribute to the upkeep of the website, and be able to access a couple of rather fun bonuses. I've been a paying member for two years now, after receiving a three month free upgrade to paid membership, which lasted almost a year, and, when that ran out, I decided I liked it so much I would keep paying the membership fees every year (which is in the area of £36 a year).

The journey I've been on over the years has been documented on Blipfoto and I'd encourage you to head over to my profile. There's about four and a half years worth of photos, and memories, listed there. If you'd interested and are after a small challenge, I'd ask you to give Blipfoto a go... its worth the adventure, even if you don't post every day (you don't have to). If you don't like it, you can always deactivate your account!
