A Case of Compassion

Dear Readers

This post has no ties to Compassion UK. This is my experiences of sponsorship with an amazing organisation!

Some of you may or may not have heard of the sponsorship program that is run by the Christian Charity known as Compassion. It is very similar to World Vision. Compassion International is a charity organisation that provides sponsorship for children in a list of countries and people in Europe and the States can find a child on the website, who are listed as in need of sponsorship, and choose to sponsor that child. I first remember hearing about Compassion when I was volunteering wth Youth With A Mission, Heidebeek, Netherlands. I was organising an outreach trip to Rwanda, and several of the girls in the group going to Rwanda wanted to know if they go and visit the children they were sponsoring (they did end up organising something with the YWAM base they went to in Kigali, Rwanda). Some Dutch friends of mine (and my family) also sponsored children through Compassion in the Netherlands. Many different countries have offices that allow those living in that country to be a part of the sponsorship program.

I've been sponsoring a little girl in Brazil since the first week of January 2018. I don't get a lot of letters and the like from her, but I do still enjoy sending letters and cards to her every few weeks. I often end up using the online letter writing tools on Compassion UK members' area on their website. Compassion will organise that the letters get translated so she can read them in Portuguese. Whenever she writes, her letter gets scanned and sent to me digitally, though Compassion do send me the original via post as well (though these usually take a bit longer to arrive). I'm planning to continue with this girl's sponsorship until she graduates from the Compassion Program run in her local area (usually between the ages of 18 and 22, depending on when she graduates). I would love to sponsor another child, but at the moment, we aren't in a financial place to support anyone else, except this little girl, For her own protection (the reason I haven't mentioned more than this girl's gender and what country she lives in to protect her and the project she goes to).

If you are interested in sponsoring a child there are several organisations that have sponsorship programs. I've linked the websites for the three I've listed below. Just click on the title of the one you're interested in sponsoring a child with (hopefully you'll be redirected to the right website).

  1. Compassion - they're the Christian organisation, who I sponsor that little girl with.

  2. World Vision - a secular charity that aims to get every child out of poverty and get a sponsor all children who are registered with them.

  3. Operation Uganda - this is an Australian based charity that has a sponsorship program in Uganda. I've known the founders since they first went to Uganda. Though I'm not sure if you can sponsor children with them if you aren't based in Australia.

I really hope that you take a step and do something good, that you'll decide to make one child's life better by sponsoring that child. I've seen the good things that sponsorship does, first hand. This was because I grew up in Uganda, and many of the children who had sponsorship had the world open up before them because of the generous support of those who were giving money to their education and putting food on their tables, through sponsorship. They deserve the same opportunities we've had, where we were born shouldn't effect the outcome of our lives.

Lots of love and until next time

xx
