August 2020

Change doesn't come from comfort.

Life has been busy with many things and has felt like it has been rushing past at a million miles an hour. July has melted into August as the summer heat has hit new records in the UK (37.8°C at London Heathrow). Andy ended up buying a fan, which we had permanently on for the better part of several days. It was during this time that I was grateful for the fact that I work nights. The temperatures haven't been so painfully unbearable at night and in the early hours of the mornings. Its been during this summer that I've been so grateful for my shaved head. As you can see from the photo on the right, it has started to grow back, I'm not planning to dye it again in a long time and I'm also not planning to cut it this short. Its lovely having my natural hair colour back, as I had forgotten what shade it was due to years of high chemical products being used.

As you may have read from the news, it appears that there have been issues with containing and controlling this virus. There is a list of countries that have the two week quarantine if you arrive from having spent time there. Hannah, my gorgeous sister, was due to spend sometime with me this last week. She lives in France. When she booked the tickets a few weeks back there was no restrictions in place. However, last week, Boris Johnson imposed the 14 day quarantine on anyone travelling from France. This threw our plans down the drain as Hannah had only planned to spend her weekend with me, and couldn't afford to take a month off work, as it was likely she'd have to self-isolate on her return home. So we've put our plans on hold and decided to wait to see what would happen over the next few months. The months long lockdown has also thrown the UK into another recession as shops and firms have been hard hit. This has led to people being loosing their jobs in droves. I'm just glad that I'm in a job that is so critical, though somewhat high risk.

Over the next few months, I will aim to write whenever I can, though I can't make any promises about the regularity of my posts. My work schedule is somewhat hectic at present, as I work 4 nights a week. Often I don't work in single blocks of 4 nights, which would have given me more time to do other things, beyond sleeping. As it stands, the next few weeks are going to be a haze of one shift on, one night off, two night shifts on, then a night off. I have often ended up sleeping for more than 20 hours on the go, before getting myself back to work for another shift. I'm just glad that coffee was invented as it has helped me get through many a long shift or two. So I'm going to try to write at least one post every month with a rough update for you about life at the time of writing the post.

I'm at the Horley library, using one of their computers and I'm almost out of time. I'll write again when I can.
