Life In It's Fullness

Updated: May 15, 2020

The late few weeks have been rather busy with work and it's been following me into my home life too. The hotel Andy and I work for has just gone through a change of management, what with the general manager leaving and one of the assistant managers going on maternity leave. This has meant that there's been a lot of tension amongst the staff as to how things are changing. In some cases, drastically. In the few weeks since my last post, we haven't had any new starters (people who are just joining the hotel as team members) but we have lost another member of the team. We don't know why he left, just that he got sacked. This means that the rest of us are trying to make do as best we can.

I've realised that bar work isn't for everyone. It's why there's always such a high turnover of staff in many bars and pubs. This is because it takes a certain type of steal in your bones to deal with the day to day misadventures and the hard work. I could tell so many different stories from my shifts at Travelodge, but it's something I won't go into now. If anything, my work at Travelodge has made me realise how much I love the job I do. It's something that that I've realised that I get a buss from.  I know I'm not on the best salary, minimum wage for my age, but I really enjoy the hard work. To be fair, almost daily I'll  have some really good conversations with my colleagues and the guests. Some of our guests are regulars and work at the airport for months at a time, their companies will put them up with us, so I've gotten to know them well, or the cabin crew,a few of whom are also regular faces and I've gotten to know pretty well.

Then there's the holiday makers and the business people. They're only with us one night and often I'll never see them again. Though there are a few who will always stand out in my mind, like the Californian couple I served the other night (I don't know if they'll read this) but they made my shift. They were travelers and have seen a lot of the world, like me, it was amazing to talk to people who have traveled and have done bar work in the US. I hope I meet them again.

Until next time!
